History
Making history from a stroke of genius.
In 1992, a letter was sent from members of both The Buffalo Club & The Saturn Club from Maurice L. Naylon III, A.K.A “The Chairman.” It put forth the notion of a tournament between the two clubs to be held on a biennial basis. Since there were several members at each club who knew one another and were avid golfers, a friendly competition made perfect sense. Replicating the Ryder Cup format, this tournament would uphold the rich traditions that are shared by the game and both clubs. The three-day tournament would pit golfer against golfer in a contest of skill, but would be born in a spirit of camaraderie. It would breathe life into the phrase, “Amicitia Per Ludum,”, or rather, “Friendship Through Sport.” It was also decided that a tastefully designed sterling silver trophy would go to that year’s winner. Both clubs embraced the concept with enthusiasm. The only question that remained was what to name the tournament. The answer was quite simple when you realize that both clubs share a grand avenue as well as a well-developed sense of sportsmanship. Thus, the Delaware Cup was born.
